26
km. north of Kandy beside the Kandy-Dambulla road lies an ancient monastery
rock temple known as "Aluvihara" another significant place in
the history of Buddhism where the Buddhist principles and its commentaries,
which were until then handed down orally, were written for the first time
at Aluvihara Temple. The caves are situated in rocks, bulging down from the mountains high above the valley. Some of the caves are adorned with fine frescoes as well as colourful statues of devils and sinners that show the various forms of punishment handed out in the afterlife. |
