This
Buddhist temple is situated not far from the placid waters of Beira Lake
on a plot of land that was originally a small hermitage on a piece of
marshy land. It is not only famous as a Temple it is an important Buddhist
centre which includes several imposing buildings, the ever expanding temple
complex has a library, a museum and an extraordinarily eclectic array
of jeweled and gilded gifts presented by devotees and well-wishers over
the years. Most of the Buddha images on display in the temple were donated
by Buddhists from Thailand, Myanmar and Japan. Gangaramaya Temple is responsible
for organizing the famous Navam Perahera on the February poya day each
