Ballooning |
Imagine the
breathtaking experience of floating over some of Sri Lanka's
dramatically varied landscape ranging from the ancient
cities of the Cultural Triangle to the jungles of a National
Park. Hot Air Ballooning is relatively new to Sri Lanka
although has become very popular and a truly exciting
way of seeing the country, which provides a remarkable
experience never to be forgotten.
Hot air ballooning has also become a popular adventure
sport in Sri Lanka. The inaugural Sri Lanka Balloon
Festival was held in 2003 and since then has been continued
almost biennially. The 2008 festival held during March-April
was declared a National event by the Ministry of Tourism
and is organized by the Ceylon Airship and Ballooning
Club and currently remains as the only aviation event
in the country.
Hot Air Ballooning is reliant on suitable weather conditions.
The best time for flying is October to April when light
winds and lack of rain prevail, the most popular ballooning
sites are at Sigiriya and Uda Walawe mainly due to logistical
reasons.
A typical flight is scheduled early in morning with
flights commencing soon after dawn. The exact start
time varies depending on the season and will be determined
at the time you make your booking. The total experience
from being collected from the hotel within a 20 km radius
from the city of Galle the preparation and inflation
of the balloon, takeoff, the actual flight to the landing
and retrieval and return to our hotel is approx 4-hrs.
The arrangements for this activity and equipment is
outsourced through a professional company who uses Balloons
manufactured in Australia and the equipment used ranges
from 80,000 cu. ft. balloons suited for 3 persons to
a 350,000 cu. ft. suitable for up to16 persons.. The
balloon pilots are well trained by instructors from
the UK. Throughout the flight, an experienced ground
crew (following the flight path in a jeep) are in constant
communication with the pilot of the balloon, ensuring
that everything runs smoothly. So all you need to do
is relax, enjoy the peace and quite and admire the truly
spectacular views of Sri Lanka from hundreds of feet
above. |

White
Water Rafting |
If you're
looking to incorporate an action-packed adventure in your
Itinerary, why not go for a white water rafting experience
in the numerous rapids found in Sri Lanka ? This activity
is great fun for first-timers and experts alike, and is
a sport that does not require immense physical strength.
An average level of fitness and a calm disposition is
quite enough. The ability to swim would of course be an
advantage in case of an emergency situation, however it
is not strictly essential as each rafter is provided with
a Personal Flotation Device. This sport activity however
is not suitable for those suffering from heart ailments
and conditions such as epilepsy, while being under the
influence of intoxicants would also be very unwise. There
are a wide range and grading of rapids on some of Sri
Lanka 's Rivers, more turbulent waters such as Kelani
River and the Kotmale river in particular which offer
4-5 rapids to Kitulgal which rates between 2-3. Kitulgala
seems to be the most popular due to it’s ideal conditions,
location and facilities, approximately 80 km from the
Colombo road to Nuwara Eliya via Avissawella Kitulgala
became quite a famous town when it was selected for the
film location for David Lean's 1957 blockbuster movie,
“Bridge on the River Kwai”. Since then many
foreign visitors just stop here to gaze across the Kelani
River where once stood the most famous bridge in cinematic
history. Tours can be arranged for anything from 1 hour
to a half-day including lunch. |
